SEVEN GIRLS DROWNED, FOUR OF ONE FAMILY

Cedar Rapids, Ia.--- A party of eight children at a picnic on the river bank only 3 blocks from home went wading Thursday afternoon.
The smallest one slipped into a deep hole in the river, and in trying to rescue her six others were drowned.
The Dead:

Lucille Sweeding, aged 7
Hazel Sweeding, aged 14
Gladys Sweeding, aged 10
Josie Sweeding, aged 12
Ruth Coyle, aged 11
Cora Coyle, aged 9
Clara Usher, aged 16

Ruth Klersey, the only survivor, said they were wading when Lucille slipped off a shelf in the river bottom into the deep hole.
Hazel rushed after her, slipped into the hole, then the next girl rushed after her, and so they kept trying to save each other until all of the girls except Ruth Klersey had drowned.
She then ran home and gave alarm. Four of the bodies were quietly removed from the water, but it was too late to resuscitate them.

Scientists don't seem to be taking the interest they ought to in that Arizona meteor.
According to the report, which comes direct from Chicago, the meteor covers two acres of ground and crushed a family of Mexicans and a herd of sheep when it fell.
If those who are inclined to doubt the story will examine the map of the United States they will see that Arizona is there, in plain letters.

SPIRITS SEPERATE A COUPLE

Objection of the husband to strange noises and weird pranks of unseen things, enticed to their domicile by his spiritualistic wife, caused the divorce suit to which Henry Meinholtz and his wife are parties, and taken under advisement by Judge Wood yesterday.

The couple were married July 9th last year and separated November 21. She charged that he objected to her lady friends calling on her, that he choked her, drove her from home, locked the door on her, and told her that he did not have a bit of use for her. She said he promised before they were married not to interfere with her religious principles.

Meinholtz contested the suit, but did not ask for divorce. He denied his wife's charges. He said he was willing for his wife's friends to call on her, but objected to having spiritualistic séances held at his house. He said that his wife stated that she did not care for him, and said she was going to leave him.

Holt County Sentinel (Mo.) Jan. 21, 1910 Pg3

Grace, the five-year-old child of Mr. and Mrs. John Colwell, was severely burned Monday morning, January 10. She was combing her hair with a celluloid comb, near a lamp, when the comb caught fire and communicated the fire to her hair.

Los Angeles Herald January 15, 1899

A CELLULOID COMB

Mrs. John Taylor of 812 De la Vina street narrowly escaped an agonizing death last evening owing to her celluloid black hair comb catching fire from a hot lamp, near which she was standing.
The hair on top of her head was burned off, her face badly blistered, and her hands also. Her husband's opportune appearance and aid saved Mrs. Taylor's life.

San Francisco Call June 18, 1899

VICTIMS OF CELLULOID COMBS

A trio of accidents of the same kind in 3 different towns yesterday resulted in the scalping of the girls who were the unfortunate victims.

Miss Sallie Van Meter of Chillicothe, Ohio, had her hair all burned off while leaning over a grate catching her celluloid comb on fire. She is terribly injured.

At Zanesville, Ohio, Miss Lulu Moore, a society girl, got too near the grate, igniting her celluloid comb and was scalped before help arrived.

At Wheeling, W. Va., Miss Mary Conner, while raking coal in the grate, got too near the fire and her celluloid comb ignited, burning her terribly.
