MAD DOGS WARNING

A mad dog appeared yesterday evening at Matt Johnson's on the Millville road, about 3 miles from Richmond.
He was seen with the sheep and hogs but it is not known if he bit any animals on the farm. Johnson and a friend went in pursuit of the dog, but we are not informed if they had killed it.

Another rabid dog appeared last night at Jake Seek's about a mile northwest of Richmond, and bit one of Seek's dogs and 3 more belonging to a negro man living on the Dave Conrow place.
It is not known if any stock were bitten. At last accounts the dog had not been killed. Owners of dogs should confine them or kill them now.

FAINTS, BUT HOLDS CHILD

Mrs. Frank Lane of 3646 North Eleventh street fainted when the fuse in the controller box of a Broadway car burned out at Broadway and Hebert street, but clung to her 9-year-old son.
Other passengers on the car, believing Mrs. Lane had died, forgot their own excitement and ran to her assistance.
Mrs. Lane was carried into a grocery store and revived by a physician. The fire in the controller box caused a flash equaling a pyrotechnic display, and the dozen passengers were much excited.

Rich Hill Tribune (Mo.) Aug. 13, 1903 Pg4

England has been staggered by the appalling increase of insanity reported by the Lunacy Commission.

Under 50 years of age there are about 36,000 lunatics in England and Wales today. In 1859 the proportion of lunatics to the population 1 in 536. Today it's 1 in 293.
The increase in lunacy since 1894 is extraordinary. How much war is responsible for the appalling increase is unknown.

Students seeking to explain the cause of the increase find drink accounts for almost a quarter of the total cases among men and about 10 per cent among the women. Physical rather than direct mental cause is responsible for the great increase in insanity.

33 per cent of the cases are attributed to disease. The chief increase is found among the pauper classes, whose lack of nourishment causes a tendency to disease and weaken the mind. The increase of lunacy among the well-to-do classes is disproportionately larger than in 1859.

Killing your dog might be a little drastic, just so it won't get bitten.

Strange that you should mention that. I was going to post this other article but forgot.

Ripley County Democrat (Mo.) April 22, 1910

The Board of Health in Madison County last week ordered all the cats, dogs and birds in houses where there had been smallpox to be killed to prevent the spread of the disease. This seems to be drastic, and we have never heard of it being done in this section.

CRAMMED FULL OF SKELETONS

Yuma, A.T., July 30--- On the White River, 8 miles from Camp Apache, has been found a remarkable cave.
For 600 feet from the entrance, the explorers were obliged to crawl on their hands and knees, using candles and lanterns for light.

They found between 300 and 400 human skeletons, indicating the remains of persons who had perhaps been smothered to death by smoke long ago. Some of them were in crevices just large enough to admit a human body. The skeletons are of various sizes, some being very small.

The skulls are of a brown color, with the exception of a few that are white. The White Mountain Apaches are very superstitious about the cave, and say that within it there is a large lake of water. The visitors found no water, but intend to explore it further. There are but two ways of entering the cave.
