There is an episode on the old TV western Law Of The Plainsman titled " The Comet."
This fat swindler and two of his cohorts show up in a New Mexico town when a comet is in the sky. He starts preaching doom and gloom to the residents and promises to save them if they buy his anti-comet pills.
A deputy discovers that the pills are just peppermint candies with the red stripes washed off and plans to tell the marshal but the swindlers bump him off before he gets the chance.
The marshal soon finds out about his deputy and arrests the fat guy while he is peddling his bogus pills to the town's suckers.
As the marshal is leading him away, he turns to the crowd to thank them and says, " Be sure to catch my next performance in Roswell...when I hang."
