THINKS AIRSHIPS ARE AFTER HIM

Washington, Oct 30---Edward Tanner, 33 years old, a native of Switzerland, and a crank, tried to see the President today, but he did not get far beyond the doors of the executive offices before his condition was discovered.
He was taken to police headquarters and later to St. Elizabeth Insane Asylum. His delusion is that he is being continually pursued by airships. He thought the President would make them stop bothering him.

Tanner said he had a wife in Memphis, Tenn., but he came direct from northern Montana to see the President. He has been in the city since Monday.

IN GRIP OF GIANT OCTOPUS- BOY SAVED FROM TERRIBLE DEATH

Nice, Apr. 3---Hundreds of holiday-makers at Le Lavanbou, a popular resort near Toulon, witnessed a desperate struggle to save a five-year-old boy from the death-grip of a giant octopus.

The octopus had been caught by local fishermen and was exhibited in a tank around which huge crowds gathered. The boy, over-curious, and not realizing the danger, plunged his hand into the tank. Immediately the octopus gripped him by the wrist with its tentacles and started to drag him under the water.
The boy screamed in terror, women shrieked, and the boy's mother fainted as the fishermen fruitlessly tried to force the monster to release its hold.
When hope was almost abandoned, a young fisherman, slashing frenziedly with a knife, severed the coiling tentacles and the octopus sank back, leaving the boy senseless with fright.

Man's body found in cave 40 years later because a tree had been growing from his stomach from a seed he had eaten.

On August 18, 1961, a local newspaper reported that thousands of crazed seabirds were sighted on the shores of North Monterey Bay in California.
The birds, called sooty shearwaters, regurgitated anchovies, flew into objects and died in the streets. Alfred Hitchcock, who lived nearby, called the Santa Cruz Sentinel for more information. This inspired his 1963 thriller " The Birds."
Years later it was determined the birds had eaten a toxin from a type of algae that caused disorientation and seizures.

ROBBERS FEED BABY

Chicago, May 6--- The loving care displayed by two burglars for a baby was the one beautiful feature of the robbery of the Edward Solovy apartment yesterday.
The burglars met Mrs. Solovy in the hall and escorted her with pistols into the apartment. They took the baby from her arms and bound the mother to a chair.
The baby began to cry.
The burglars stopped their burgling and freed Mrs. Solovy's arms into which they placed the infant. They figured the baby was hungry so they went to the icebox and got some milk. This they prepared expertly under Mrs. Solovy's directions.
Having reduced the little one to a point of gurgling content, the burglars gathered up jewelry valued at $1,200 and went away.

In 1940, a woman in St. Louis was driving during a thunderstorm with her two-year-old son when her car slid off the road and landed upside down in a rain-swollen creek.
Minutes later, two men in a Dodge coupe stopped at the scene and ran down into the creek to help but couldn't open the doors.

One of them ran back to their car and came back with a hammer and a large pry bar. They pried a door open and pulled the woman and her son out as the car filled with water.
They then dropped them off at a hospital and quickly sped away.

The police showed up at the hospital in the morning to question the woman about the accident and to get some information on the strangers who saved the woman and her son.
The description she gave on the men and their car matched an eyewitness description of the men seen leaving an office building where a safe had been blown and thousands of dollars stolen.

The police theorized that the tools the men used to free the woman and her son from their car were most likely used to yank the door off the office safe.
