STRANGE TORNADO TALES

2006

Matt Suter was carried 1,307 feet by a tornado and survived.

https://abcnews.go.com/GMA/story?id=1749637

1925 Tri-State Tornado (That one was a biggie)

A man covered in mud was found in a duck pond on a farm belonging to Frank Newkirk of Sandborn, Indiana, after the tornado hit.
The man told Newkirk that it was the biggest storm he had ever seen and that it had come down over the big hills and onto the fields he had been working in.

Newkirk told him there weren't any hills around here and that it was all Hoosier farmland, flat as a pancake. The man asked, " Where's here ? "
Newkirk answered, " Sandborn."

The stranger then asked Newkirk if it was near Old Appleton, and was told no.
" Is it near Frohna or Wittenberg ? " he asked, and was again told no.

The man then told Newkirk he had never heard of Sandborn, Missouri, before. Newkirk replied, " This is Sandborn, Indiana, you're about two states away from home, friend."

( Old Appleton Missouri is 250 miles from Sandborn Indiana.)

1896

The tornado that hit St. Louis in 1896 destroyed the poor house first and then damaged an insane asylum for women.
An account from one eyewitness:

" The lunatics all ran. The next day, those that were alive were found in tower Grove Park hiding behind trees. One policeman that tried to get one of them had his suit taken away from him. Another insane woman pulled a policeman's beard out by the roots."

I read about another tornado that knocked down a wall at a St. Louis jail while the prisoners were in the yard. Instead of racing for their freedom they knocked down a guard and fought tooth and nail to get back to the safety of their cells.
