TRAIL OF CHARLES ASHMORE

On November 9, 1878, 16-year-old Charles Ashmore left the family home in Quincy, Illinois to fetch clean water from a nearby spring.
His family watched as he picked up a tin bucket and headed out in to the snowy night, blissfully unaware that they'd never see him again.

His father, Christian, became anxious when he hadn't returned for some time, and along with his oldest daughter, Martha, headed to the spring to find him. As the pair followed the well-worn route, Christian lifted up his lantern and told Martha to stay still.

Charles had left footprints in the snow, but his tracks suddenly stopped. Unnerved, they ventured to the spring, but saw it was iced over. Charles and his bucket hadn't made it that far.

Four days later Charles' mother claimed to have heard his voice faintly echoing in the place where his footprints stopped. While it was quickly dismissed as a grief-induced hallucination, other family members heard his voice at random times over the next few months.

It was described as " seeming to come from a great distance, faintly." Yet none could determine its direction, nor repeat its words. By midsummer it was heard no more.
