I heard that they sold little wooden dolls of Black Jack with a string around the neck before the hanging.

Circus Mishaps In The 1800s

In the 1870s, a traveling circus called the James Robinson & Company Circus decided to drum up some publicity for their upcoming show in Middleton, Missouri, by having their band and some lions give a sneak peek performance during the parade through town.
Despite being warned not to, for multiple reasons, the band decided to sit on top of the huge lion cage during the parade.
The roof of the cage didn't support the weight of the ten band members and they fell through. Seven of them were mauled to death as horrified parade-goers watched.

St. Louis Nov. 3, 1887

The John Robinson Circus train was wrecked at the Union Station this evening killing two men and freeing a pair of lions, a tiger, a leopard and a hyena.
The excitement was intense, but the animals, being more scared than the people, were easily captured.
The lions had jumped out of their damaged cage, circled the train wreck twice and then hid underneath a boxcar with only their tails visible. The tiger made a bee-line for the baggage room and took refuge behind some trunks.
The hyena ducked behind a freight car and howled. The leopard ran around for a few minutes and knocked a couple of men over and then jumped back into his wrecked cage.
