The Tarborough Southerner (N.C.) Feb. 19, 1875 Pg1

Raleigh.--- A strange and ghastly machine is now on exhibition in our city. It is a clock, said to have once belonged to a Japanese prince.
In front of the clock's disk is a gong swung upon poles and near it is a pile of artificial human limbs. The pile is made up of the full number of parts necessary to constitute 12 perfect bodies, but all is heaped together in apparent confusion.

When the hands of the clock indicate the hour of one, out from the pile crawls just the number of parts needed to form the frame of one man, part coming to part with quick click and, when completed, the figure springs up, seizes a mallet, and walking up to the gong, strikes one blow.

This done, he returns to the pile and falls to pieces again. When 2 o'clock comes two men rise and do likewise, and at the hour of noon and midnight the entire heap springs up and, marching to the gong, strike one after the other. After 12 blows they all fall to pieces.

( I tried to find a picture of this clock on the internet, but was unable.)

DOGS WITH NATURAL HANDLES

A Cincinnati milliner returned from Paris and was asked what the strangest fashionable novelty she had seen.
" A dog with a natural handle." she replied. Parisian ladies are wild about dogs as pets but do not like carrying them around or leading them around on a rope and having to pick them up over the pavement. A clever surgeon cuts the end from a little dog's tail, makes an incision in the middle of his back, sticks in the tail tip, lets it heal fast, and it becomes a handy handle.

A KING'S REMAINS

The dean of Gloucester claims to have discovered that the remains of Osric, King of Northumbria, who was buried A.D. 729, lie beneath the shrine erected to his memory in the famous old abbey of Gloucester.
The shrine was erected in the days of Henry VIII, and was supposed to be merely a memorial. If the claim is proved, it gives to Gloucester the distinction of containing the oldest known remains of the Saxon kings. Fragments of the remains of two other Saxon kings are in Winchester and Durham cathedral.
