SHELLS

The passion for curious sea shells is unbounded in Europe, and is increasing in the United States. An officer of a ship, arrived at Boston from Callao, mentioned that an English gentleman at Callao had expended ten thousand pounds in shells, with which he has laden a ship.
They were probably bought for speculation, as many were of the same species.

AN ACTIVE YOUNGSTER

The moment that a young crocodile breaks its shell it is to all intents and purposes as active as at any time during its life.
It will make straight for the water, even if it be out of sight and a good distance off, and will pursue its prey with eagerness and agility during the first hour of its free existence.

A MASTODON COMES TO LIGHT

Oakfield, N.Y., Jul. 31---The remains of a mastodon of the tertiary period were exhumed on Tuesday in a bed of marl recently discovered about a mile south of this village. Professor Ward, of Rochester is investigating the fossil.

Savannah Tribune (Ga.) Nov. 15, 1913 Pg2

TWICE IN THE SAME PLACE

Some people seem to be more likely to be struck by lightning than others. Father Bosco of Turin was struck 3 times on different occasions.
Mrs. Hain, an American woman who was wounded in the left foot by lightning in the year 1840, was struck again in the same spot in 1855. The Great Mithridates was reputed to have been struck in the forehead while a child and to have had his sword fused by lightning as he slept with it by his side in later life.

A VICIOUS HORSE NEARLY BITES A MAN'S ARM OFF

On Friday afternoon, the 29th of last month, as Burrel Chesney (colored), was trying to drive back to his stall, a stud horse who had got loose, in Peter Trissals Livery Stable at Forest City, the horse turned on his keeper, biting him in the arm and carrying the unfortunate man out of the stable into the yard, where he dropped him and knelt to pick him up again.

The horse was mad with rage. People who witnessed the onslaught of the raving horse declare that they never saw a horse act as mad as he did, and he seemed determined to kill his victim and all those who approached him.
Mr. Byron Edwards who was present, struck the beast over the head, when he let go of his victim he then started to go after Edwards.

Chesney is under medical treatment and it is supposed his arm can be saved without amputation. This is the same horse that broke away from his keeper last spring and ran through our streets endangering the lives of our citizens. Something should be done with this fiendish brute. We would advise Mr. Trissal to send a good bullet through his brain.

The doctors say that his life is in danger unless he submit to the operation, but Van Houtten declared that death is preferable to blindness.
