RAT WEIGHED 12 POUNDS

Officer Webster is the proudest member of the Metropolitan Police force. Last night he killed a giant rat.

He did it with his rosewood club after a chase of several blocks on Troost avenue in the vicinity of the zoo. He not only added to his record as a sprinter and a clubber, but undoubtedly saved the reason of a belated pedestrian who stumbled over the rodent as it was prowling in a gutter in search of provender. His startled cries attracted Webster to his rescue, and then the chase began.

The officer threw his club again and again at the now terrified rodent and finally a lucky hit laid the quarry out. A few more taps finished the job, and then Webster tenderly picked up his prize and carried it to a nearby drugstore. There it was weighed and measured. The rat weighed 12 pounds and measured 18 inches from the tip of its nose to the end of its tail. Webster says, "It is the biggest rat I ever saw."

BATTLE WITH MOSQUITOS

Pana, Ill., Sept. 9--- Swollen and scarred with his features distorted beyond recognition, Andrew Schlake, a German farmer living south of this city, was found this morning wandering along the Okaw River in an apparently demented condition, with myriads of mosquitos hovering about him and covering his face and hands.

Schlake was at once taken to his home where it was found that he was suffering from hundreds of mosquito bites. The insects had bitten through the man's clothing and his face and body were a mass of great welts of bitten flesh.

When he recovered sufficiently to speak coherently Schlake explained that he had been hunting bee trees along the Okaw. Darkness came on and he became lost and wandered through the bottoms all night, fighting the mosquitos until he was nearly insane. Schlake's case is serious.

( Multiple mosquito bites can really drain your strength.)

A YOUNG GIRL POISONER

St. Joseph, Mo., Mar.17--- Several days ago someone administered poison to the family of D.B. Taylor, who resides near Craig, north of this city.
The poison was administered in coffee, and the father, D.B. Taylor, died, and the mother and two other children are in a serious condition.
The coroner's jury concluded its investigation tonight and held Miss Gertrude Taylor, a 13-year-old daughter of the dead man. She is in jail.
The girl admitted buying poison from a druggist. It is thought that she had advice from older heads.

LEG AWAITS ITS OWNER

If the man who accidentally, or otherwise, left part of his artificial anatomy in a vacant lot between Fourth street and Broadway and Washington and Lucas avenues, will call at the Fourth District Police Station today and identify that unruly member he can have it on condition that he will hereafter ascertain whether he is "all there" every night before he retires.

A cork leg was found on the vacant lot last night about 8 o'clock by John Geist, a teamster. The artificial limb was made to take the place of a right leg below the knee.
It is in good condition. It was wrapped in a newspaper when found. At the police station the opinion prevailed that the limb was on its way to the pawn shop when lost, as an old man was seen about noon walking with crutches carrying an artificial leg.
Another opinion was that the owner of the limb was on a spree and the leg refused to be a party to such proceedings and went on a strike.

QUARRELED AT THE GRAVE

Chicago, Oct. 23--- Murdered by her lover, Philip Lewis, who killed himself immediately after committing the crime, the body of Rose Adenburg still lies unburied because of a wrangle over the burial expenses.

Yesterday afternoon her body, enclosed in a common pine coffin, was taken to a cemetery near Waldheim for internment. At the grave, her father, Barney Adenburg, became involved in a dispute over the amount to be paid. The undertaker refused to go on with the funeral and the body was brought back to town and placed in Adenburg's store.

The report of Adenburg's conduct aroused the residents of the neighborhood and last night his place of business was surrounded by a crowd of enraged neighbors. The police were summoned and word was sent to the City Health Department. If the body is not interred by Adenburg today it will be taken forcibly by the police and buried at Adenburg's expense. The health department notified Adenburg that they would take summary action, as the body has not been embalmed.
