History Of The Crystal Ball

SHE CRIED HER EYES OUT

New York, April 10--- After having been treated for 6 months by some of the most eminent specialists in New York, Mrs. Matilda Quitman, 1328 Fifth avenue, is still blind.

The doctors say she has cried her eyes out. She is 32 years old and her sightless eyes are large and as black as coal. A casual observer would not suspect that she could not see. Her husband died in 1897 and her grief was intense. She wept for days at a time. Her eyes became dim.
Last June her 7-year-old daughter Mabel died. The mother was almost crazed.

She cried until there came no tears at all and only convulsive sobs shook her body, then it seemed she was moving in a twilight world.
Her friends sent her to the mountains in the hope that the change might benefit her, but she could not escape from her grief.

She returned in 2 months totally blind. Specialists, hypnotists and faith curists have all failed to restore her sight.

SWARMS OF GRASSHOPPERS

Kingfisher, O.T., Oct. 11--- A continuous stream of grasshoppers have been passing high overhead southward every day this week and a good many drop, so that they are uncomfortably numerous on the ground.
They are, to all appearance, the small red-legged variety, similar to those that devastated Kansas 18 years ago. Farmers report their fields of young wheat are covered with them and are alarmed.

ROBBED A BLIND BEGGAR

John Schipman, a blind beggar, who has been a familiar sight in Kirkwood for the last 2 days, was lured to a secluded spot in Pacific Wednesday afternoon, and robbed of $31, the savings of a year.

Schipman said that when he arrived in Pacific, a man who pretended that he wished to help him dropped a nickel in the tin cup which Schipman carried and then engaged him in conversation. Schipman finally told him in confidence of the money he possessed.
The man then proposed that he lead the beggar to a prominent place in Pacific, where the label upon his breast "Please Help The Blind," would have the most effect.
Schipman followed his guide. The robbery was the result. Schipman is 25 years old. He has been blind since infancy and is paralyzed in the legs.

SINCE THE EARTHQUAKE

Sedalia, Mo., Nov. 10--- Since the earthquake a bored well on the premises of William Martin, in East Sedalia, has been cutting some weird antics.
At irregular times during the day the water boils up from the natural level to near the top with a rumbling noise often heard in gas wells. Then it will slowly recede to its former level. Hundreds visit the well daily to witness the strange phenomenon.
