DEAD DRUNK BY A CORPSE

Topeka, Kan., Apr. 12--- The investigation of Captain Walt closed today after ex-Superintendent McCasey on the insane asylum, and ex-Steward Brown had been placed on the stand in rebuttal to Walt.

McCasey testified that Dr. Knilberg, assistant superintendent, had reported to him that she had once found Supervisor Pack dead drunk, and lying alongside of a corpse.
A patient had died, she said, and she had gone to the cemetery to attend the burial. It was Supervisor Pack's duty to convey the body to the grave.

After waiting for an hour at the cemetery she had gone to investigate the delay in Pack's arrival with the body, and had been horrified to find him in the dead house, stretched out by the side of the corpse, dead drunk and asleep.

One of the committeemen wanted to know why she hadn't buried the two together, but received no response to the question. The committee has adjourned until Wednesday morning.

SAVED FROM QUICKSAND

Wilkes Barre, Pa., July 16--- John Condoo of Pittston, Pa., had a thrilling experience last night. He went into the Susquehanna River to cool off.
He struck quicksand at the bottom and slowly sank into the river. He struggled as hard as he could, but could not extricate himself.

He continued to sink until the water reached his mouth. He had given up hope and was ready to die. He was saying a prayer when two fishermen, Frank Patint and Gus Kressler, came in sight at 4 o'clock this morning. They noticed a strange object in the water and rowed up to it.
After hard tugging they jerked the man out of the place where he was anchored all night.

It had been raining in that vicinity for several days and the dirt roof of the house, having become saturated, fell upon the family crushing them. Only one member of the family, a boy of 10 years, escaped because he was outside of the house when the accident happened.

STOLEN RING RECOVERED

At 8 o'clock last night two young girls entered the pawn shop at 531 Main street and asked to be shown some rings.
A tray was placed before them for examination and a minute afterward the proprietor noticed that one of the rings was missing.
He said nothing to arouse the suspicion of the girls, but stepped to the street and secured an officer, who placed the two girls under arrest.
At the police station they were turned over to Police Matron Lee to be searched. She found the ring concealed in the mouth of one of the girls, who gave her name as Frances Stanberg. She was locked up on the charge of shoplifting and her companion was released.

Near Piedmont, Mo., an Iron Mountain passenger train last night struck a sewing machine repairer named Charles H. Steele, who, according to his own statement, had fallen asleep on the tracks.
His skull was fractured and his right eye torn from its socket.
Steele told Doctor Johnson at the City Dispensary that his home was in Kansas, and he had been travelling about the country repairing sewing machines for several years. He was removed to the City Hospital.
