FEARED DISSECTING TABLE

Philadelphia, May 8--- The body of H.H. Holmes was this afternoon taken from the vault in Holy Cross Cemetery, where it had been under guard since the execution yesterday, and was lowered into a grave ten feet deep.

The only persons present were Attorney Samuel P. Rotan, Father McPake, of the Church of the Annunciation, and an undertaker, besides the gravediggers. The box, which contains the body embedded in cement which had already hardened, weighs over a ton, and was too wide to be lowered into an ordinary grave.

Hence a separate space was selected for the internment. The dead murderer was accorded a Christian burial, but the services were brief. At the conclusion a layer of cement two feet thick was piled upon the coffin, and his tomb will be a solid wall of rock.

These precautions were the result of Holmes' last wishes. He feared the dissecting table more than he did the grave. Lawyer Rotan has not yet examined the papers left by Holmes, but is certain no will is among them.

A STRANGE WOMAN

A strange woman appeared here on the streets last night and for over an hour furnished amusement to quite a crowd of on-lookers.
She said she was "Mollie, the slum preacher." She occupied a prominent place on a corner of Minnesota avenue, where she held a meeting over which she presided. A patrolman requested that she use the street if she desired to hold a meeting, but she replied by saying that she would stay there until the lord moved her.
She said that she was wealthy and that she was not in accord with the beliefs of any form of Christianity. She is unknown to any one in the city. She said she was going to Lansing to preach to the penitentiary inmates.

USED UMBRELLA AS PARACHUTE

New York, July 26-- With two big, strong porters standing guard at his door while detectives were coming, John R. Andrews, charged with swindling, took the chances of a leap out of a third-story window, using an umbrella as a parachute. He landed on an awning unhurt and was caught and locked up.

The man had been inserting advertisements in the papers, offering employment to stenographers provided they sent a certain sum to defray expenses of looking up references. 450 letters awaited Andrews. The Hoffman House people grew suspicious and notified the police.

Two porters were stationed at his door. The prisoner, suspecting nothing, tried to leave his room, but he was hurled back and shut in by the porters. Then it dawned upon him that he was in a trap, and, hurrying to a window, he opened an umbrella and descended gently as an aeronaut on the surface of the awning. This act was observed by another porter, who nabbed him and held him until the police arrived.

WICHITA WOMAN INSANE

A month ago a woman giving her name as Emma Smith appeared in police court of her own volition and asked Judge Burnham to send her to the workhouse for vagrancy.
She told Judge Burnham that she had been driven from home by her husband, who is a real estate agent in Wichita.
She admitted that Smith is an assumed name. Yesterday the woman was sent from the workhouse to the city hospital by order of Humane Officer Greenman. She is violently insane. She had served out her sentence at the workhouse and was about to be turned out into the world again.

PECULIAR DOUBLE FATALITY

Chicago, May 10--- A peculiar double fatality occurred last evening before hundreds of spectators in Lincoln Park.
While boating on Lake Michigan, Matthew Roche and his 10-year-old nephew, Harry Flynn, attempted to exchange seats. The boat was overturned and the boy drowned, although Roche twice succeeded in putting the little fellow on top of the capsized craft.
While this was going on, Albert Mattarl, who was in the crowd at the water's edge, suddenly pitched forward on his face, dead.
His death is ascribed to excitement caused by watching the struggles of the drowning boy.
