HIS HOUSE IS HAUNTED

Max Leopold, a German grocer at 1300 East Twelfth street, believes that spooks have been stalking about in his place of business and his family apartments for more than a week.

Three times within a week Leopold has reported to the police that some person or spirit has gone through the bureau and drawers in his house and has ransacked the drawers of his private desk.
His papers and letters were left scattered all over the desk and floor, but none were destroyed or carried away.

Leopold does not believe the work was done by anyone bent on robbery, for on two occasions the unknown intruder had an opportunity to take small sums of money.
Sgt. Matt Newell has investigated the case every time a report was made to him and he has been unable to discover the identity of the nocturnal visitor.
Leopold believes that the building in which he lives is haunted.

HE SMASHED THE PIANO

Dr. D.M. Smith, who lives on South Spear street, Argentine, caused considerable excitement at his home yesterday afternoon by attempting to destroy all of the furniture in his house.

The doctor has been behaving badly of late and only a short time ago he was put under a $100 peace bond by Justice Dauzenroth.
Some domestic trouble arose yesterday afternoon and Smith walked into the back yard and seizing an ax proceeded to demolish a fine piano. The instrument was reduced to kindling wood and the irate doctor then proceeded to try the ax on other furniture.

At this juncture his 10-year-old son rushed in from the yard with a croquet mallet and began belaboring his father over the head with it. The lad struck his father several severe blows with the mallet, causing small scalp wounds and the blood to run down his face.
The thumping seemed to bring Smith to his senses and he ran from the house.

Marshal Howard arrived on the scene shortly after, but Smith could not be found and had not been arrested at a late hour last night.
The neighbors who live near Smith say he has acted like he was slightly demented for the past few days. In the last issue of the local Argentine paper Smith published an apology to the public for his behavior.

GROWING IN HIS FACE

New York, Mar. 31--- Landsford Bergen, a 5-year-old lad of Yardley, four miles from Trenton, underwent a surgical operation today for an ailment of the face which puzzled the physicians.

The operation disclosed a grain of wheat growing in the cheek. The grain had burst open and from it numerous sprouts were shooting in different directions beneath a tumor which formed over the spot where the grain was found.
The tumor had swollen to the size of a walnut. The boy complained of an itching sensation beneath the skin. How the grain got there is unknown, but the physicians think that it entered through the eye and worked its way down.

PET BEAR CHOKED TO DEATH

H.J. Hill of Independence, mourns the loss of a pet bear which he prized very highly. Bruin met an untimely and ignominious death yesterday in a very commonplace but painful manner.

He was tied to a buggy wheel to prevent him from running away. Whether he objected to this modification of the ancient Roman custom of fastening captives to chariot wheels or whether it was just a plain case of "wheels" is not known.
It may have been suicide or it may have been accident, but all indications point to the latter supposition. At any rate the bear was choked to death and there was an imposing funeral yesterday conducted by the boys of the neighborhood, with which Bruin was a special favorite.

WHAT IS A RACCOON ?

Chicago---- The alleged larceny of a pet raccoon took J. Hirschwich, an aged Jew, into the court of Justice Dooley. It became necessary for the court to secure a description of a raccoon, and then the fun began.

Lawyers, policemen and spectators each took turns describing the animal, and when they had finished, Justice Dooley was more confused than before.
" In the first place the animal is not called a raccoon, but a ratcoon," volunteered Prosecutor McGinley, " because it looks like a rat."
" No your honor," said the defendant, " it looks like a wolf, has a bald head and a hump like a camel."

" You are all wrong," interrupted Bailiff Murphy. " A macron, as it is called, is caught in the north of Ireland, and resembles a squirrel, except that it has a hump on the back."

" It resembles a pig, only that it is bigger than a large dog." exclaimed Policeman Raferty. " The animal comes from the north of Ireland, as Mr. Murphy says. I used to catch them by the dozen when I was a boy."

Others said the animal represented a tiger, an elephant, a bull, a cat, a rat, and the opinions and descriptions were so numerous and divided that the magistrate became too bewildered to proceed, and he postponed the hearing.

The raccoon was formerly owned by Alderman Fick, of the seventh ward, who kept it as a mascot. After his election to the city council he presented it to Hyman Wolf, a saloonkeeper. The defendant lives near Wolf, and is accused of having stolen the animal.

He denied the charge and said: " I was returning from church when I saw the thing, which looked like a new kind of rat, on the sidewalk. A crowd gathered and a dog was trying to chew it up. Everybody in the crowd claimed to own it. A man picked it up and I went home."
