INSECTS GREW FAT ON IT

A box of polishing powder and a box of insect powder were delivered to the office of the county jail at the same time last week.
The polish was to be used on the copper kettles and tin pans in the kitchen. The insect powder was to be used in the cells of the jail.

The powder in the boxes were in bulk and looked very much alike. By mistake the polish was taken into the jail and all of it was puffed through a nozzle of a big bellows into every crack and crevice of the cells. The powder had been warranted to kill all insects, and the prisoners were delighted.

The morning after the powder was used the prisoners complained that the insects were as lively as ever. A negro prisoner said to Deputy Marshal Wilson: "These bugs is just fattening up on the powder, I don't believe that it's poison at all."
"Yes it is" replied Mr. Wilson. "It just needs more time to work."

The next day the cook went to use the supposed polish on his kettles and discovered the mistake.

HAS A GREAT MACHINE

Dr. J.M. Chaney has invented a scientific apparatus which is destined to become a staple article of school furniture.
The device is to locate the planets at any hour of the day or night, and can be operated by anyone. After finding the correct latitude a hand revolves on a dial fashioned similar to that of a clock.
By turning the hand to the hour, the machine locates the planets and illustrates in a moment what a diagram is supposed to do.

HEAD LITERALLY BLOWN OFF

Topeka, Kan., Dec. 2--- It is common to read in newspaper stories about some man having his head blown off, but this usually is intended to convey the idea that he had a hole blown through it or that a part of it had been torn away.
But in the case of Dick Little, who committed suicide at his home near Winchester, in Jefferson county last Saturday, such an expression would be literally true.

Little placed the muzzle of a shotgun in his mouth and pulled the trigger with a stick, which he held in his hand. The gun was not only discharged, but the muzzle being closed in the man's mouth, also exploded, tearing his head into small bits, and leaving absolutely nothing attached to the neck above the chin.

Little had been nursing his wife through a long illness and the large amount of farm work drove him insane from lack of rest and sleep.

HOUSE TURNED A SOMERSAULT

Breckenridge, Mo., Jan. 22--- During the heavy rain and hail storm which prevailed here at midnight Sunday night, a two story farmhouse three miles east of town, was blown about ninety feet from its foundation.

The building having made two complete revolutions, landed on its side intact. The family, consisting of Mont Mattux, his wife and three children, was in bed at the time of the accident, and all escaped injury except Mrs. Mattux, whose arm was dislocated.
Every article of furniture in the house was demolished and the walls were entirely stripped of plastering. Had Mr. Mattux also been injured the family would have been cremated, as the room caught fire, but the blaze was extinguished with the bed clothing.
