HORSE SHOCKED TO DEATH

Immediately opposite the Twelfth street entrance to the Four Courts, a valuable horse attached to one of Wainwright's Brewery wagons, was instantly killed by a shock from a fallen trolley wire last night.

The driver of the wagon, Antone Ziegler, of No. 1538 South Thirteenth street, narrowly escaped electrocution.
After the horse dropped to the ground the heavily charged wire swung toward the driver, and, realizing the danger, he jumped from his seat on the wagon and hurried to a place of safety. Cars on the Tower Grove and Cherokee divisions were delayed for 30 minutes.

FOUND HE WAS A LEPER

Discovery Almost Drove A Man From Barbados Insane.

New York, Feb. 26--- Archibald Mandeville, a muscular looking young man just past his 22nd year, arrived in this city by the steamer Buffon of the Lamport & Holt line, having taken passage at Barbados.

Young Mandeville is the son of a wealthy ship broker of that place, and came north en route for Ottawa, Canada, where he expected his shattered health would be restored in a colder climate.
When about to leave the barge office, Doctor Safford of the medical staff noticed that the lobes of both of Mandeville's ears were slightly swollen.

He detained him, and in a private room made a careful examination and found the telltale marks of the leper. When the doctor told Mandeville that he was a doomed man, the terrible knowledge that he was a leper came to him, and with it the consciousness that he is to be an outcast henceforth, shunned by his fellows as a thing unclean.
This knowledge almost unseated his reason. He was ordered deported, returned to the Buffon, placed in a stateroom and carefully guarded.

CHINAMEN AT A CEMETERY

Chinamen performed an annual ceremony in honor of their dead at Union Cemetery yesterday.
A collection of rice, cooked fowl, grapes, bananas and tea was spread in the midst of the grassy graves.

Candles on long slender stems were lighted and thrust in the ground at the head of the graves, two at each grave.
Folded papers containing prayers in Chinese were unfolded and piled near the center of the burying ground and set on fire. These burning papers were slowly stirred while the fire consumed them, and bits of ashes darted up and floated in the sky until out of sight. So, it is believed, the petitions to the almighty for the departed souls ascend to him on high.

The unusual ceremony attracted a large crowd of spectators. The Chinamen poured out the tea from a little china pot into tiny cups, then emptied the cups at the base of the tombstones, together with rice and chopsticks.

PREDICTS END OF WORLD

J.H. Cannon, the sun worshipper, who is in jail at Granite City, Ill., observed the total eclipse of that great orb yesterday morning with intense delight.
He spurned the smoked glass that was offered him, saying that those who "understood and believed" needed nothing but the naked eye to contemplate the sun at any time.

To observe the phenomena more closely he inverted himself, and stood for over half an hour on his head. While in this posture he muttered incantations and gave vent to sinister prophecies. He claimed to see a time card just above the upper rim of the darkened planet, and marked on this in blazing letters the doom of the world.

"Never again, he said, will man see an eclipse-all will be swallowed up in the destruction of the world, which is never at hand. Only those who worship the sun and "know all" will escape," according to his prediction.

"The sun is God and power of powers" said Cannon. "I have seen and heard, and know that the time is near at hand, if this had come ten years back, all would have been swallowed up. The sun is getting hungry and could swallow a dozen worlds. Skulls and crossbones are in the air like dust in the wind. The time card I saw was plain."

THINKS HE'S A BIG INDIAN

Topeka, Sept. 21--- A patient was received at the Topeka Insane Asylum last night who is possessed of a most remarkable delusion.

His name is E.S. Fletcher, 26 years old, and his home is in Jackson county. For the past two years he has been a cattle herder on the Pottawatomie Indian Reservation, and his dementia is that he has been transformed into a big buck Indian whose mission on earth is to whoop and dance.

He keeps it up constantly and gives an almost marvelous rendition of the sing-song guttural which composes the red man's song. When he arrived at the asylum last night he was in a state of collapse from the terrible strain of whooping and dancing for three days and nights uninterrupted.

SHE PHOTOGRAPHS A HANGING

Gainesville, Fla., Feb. 23--- At the hanging of Richard James here on Friday, for killing his wife, a woman richly dressed and supposedly a tourist, carrying in her hand a Kodak, pushed her way through the crowd and took a position on the step-ladder a few feet from the trap.

Despite the solemnity of the occasion, which would have caused the average woman to faint, this one was cool and perfectly composed.
She gazed about the room with an expression of satisfaction and remained until after the trap was sprung, photographing the scene as Father Lynch and the doomed man stood in secret conference a second before the latch was pulled.

She also got pictures of the body as it swung in mid-air in its frightful contortions, and afterward as the body became still.
After the hanging she took snapshots of the room and guards, and then unconcernedly walked off. Her name could not be ascertained.
