PLANTS FEED UPON ANIMALS

Most land animals feed upon plants and most plants feed upon the soil and the air. But there are a few plants which reverse the order of nature and feed upon animals, at least to a certain extent.

They may fairly be called plants of prey for, though they do not swoop like eagles or pounce like tigers, they catch live game and kill, devour and digest it.
These abnormal plants are commonly called insectivorous but the name carnivorous is more fitting, for some species feed on fishes and mammals in addition to insects and assimilate pieces of meat offered to them.
At least 500 species of plants catch insects, but many of them appear to make no use of their prey.

A CLOUD OF BUTTERFLIES

In one of the fashionable seashore resorts on the Baltic Sea to the east of Swinemunde, a peculiar phenomenon was witnessed by a great many people.

Shortly after noon there appeared from the sea a light cloud which, coming nearer, had the appearance of a snowstorm, although the sky was almost cloudless and the temperature up in the 80s.
The apparition was caused by millions upon millions of small white butterflies, which flew by in enormous quantities, as it took more than 15 minutes before the cloud had passed the face of the sun.

A great many of the butterflies fell down, probably from exhaustion, and were eagerly devoured by the sea gulls, of which a great many hover about these shores.

"SHOT IN THE MOUTH"

A man half-crazed with drink and suffering from the extremely cold weather, rushed into a second-hand store on Walnut street yesterday afternoon and threw himself on the floor with the exclamation, "I'm shot and I'm sure to die. Billie shot me in the head."

The storekeeper was thoroughly alarmed and ran to the Central police station, not far distant, with the news that a man had been shot on Walnut street. A policeman and a couple of detectives were dispatched to the place and found the supposed dying man writhing on the floor in mock agony.

"Where are you shot?" inquired Detective Ennis, as he lifted the man's head from the floor. "In the mouth," screamed the man, "and by the bartender next door." The detectives rushed out to arrest the bartender, for the man had bloodstains about his mouth where someone had struck him with their fist.

Then the man explained that he "had been shot in the mouth with about 30 whiskies" and he was taken over to the Central station for drunkenness. When it was learned there that he had adopted his ruse in order to be imprisoned and thus obtain shelter he was told that he would be punished for his joke by being turned loose.
The man was allowed to warm at a steam heater and then was set adrift.

FIFTY PERSONS POISONED

Sycamore, Ill., Mar. 29--- Fifty persons, old, young and middle-aged, were poisoned today at a chicken pie dinner given to the members of the Baptist Church.

The dinner was largely attended, but shortly after eating, several of the persons became violently ill. The sick list has rapidly increased every hour since, and every physician in this section is doing his best to save the lives of the people.

Investigation has so far failed to reveal the cause. It was at first thought the poisoning was due to chicken, which formed the principal item on the bill of fare, but it was learned that the persons had not eaten of the chicken were among the sickest. Others thought the coffee caused the trouble, but the case was the same as the chicken--persons who did not drink the beverage were in a terrible condition.

So far no deaths have occurred, but most are in critical condition. Experts are examining all the food, but have been unable to discover any signs of poison.
