One of these days when you have an out-of-the-blue spiritual experience, you'll know what it is... and maybe you'll thank me for telling you.

Ghosts go out from their hiding places at night, and return back at day-time

"After man dies, his dead relatives will come and take him to their places where they talk, visit each other, eat, drink and walk for enjoyment in the gardens; this is at night;

but when morning comes on and the sun rises, they will return to their places and will not get out till the sun-set time.

Some of them may go out during day-time and wander in some places, but they will not have comfort in their tour and will not enjoy, but the sun hurts them by its rays, birds pierce them by their wings, and people voices when they talk and the noise annoy them, and the wind carries them to a faraway places; so they return back to their places.

This is the condition of one whose punishment is fulfilled, and no punishment remained for him, if he is one of the faithful.

The reason for them to go out at night, and to return back at day-time is that the sun hurts them; because they cannot look at it or sit under its rays; and life does not suit them save in the darkness; because their sight is sharp and keen; so that they satisfy with a mere little light like the light of a lamp or the light of the moon, or without any light.

Therefore, from this aspect, they are like the bat which flies at night and disappears during day-time.

For this reason, they inhabit the basements or the places, which are uninhabited by people, to which the sun-rays do not reach, or in caves, ruins or the houses-uninhabited by people.

God - be exalted - said in the Quran 76: 13 ; describing the dwellers of Paradise:
مُتَّكِئينَ فِيها عَلَى الأرائكِ لا يَرَوْنَ فِيها شَمْساً ولا زَمْهَرِيراً

The explanation:
(Reclining therein upon couches, they shall neither see therein sun [or heat], nor moon [or piercing cold.] )

So, God - be exalted – avoids them the sun; because it hurts them."

The description you included sounded very much like a vampire.

This is what happens to people who don't want to believe in another world beyond this one.

Remember that old bible quote... where your treasures are, you will be also.

Well, that applies to this. If you loved your home and you didn't believe in anything else, you may still be living there for years after you die. The fact that your house has been sold and someone else lives there now and is sleeping in your bedroom, well, that's what happens.

See why it's best to believe in something than nada?
So if we believe in "nada", we get to live out our fantasies or desires in the next life? Wow! I can think of a few places where I wouldn't mind "killing" some time.

I do not believe that spirits are on the same dimension as we are and thus live in a different time/space continuum. Earthy time constraints do not apply to them, hours, minutes, etc., are meaningless. Therefore we cannot judge or speculate on their behavior based upon earthly norms.

I think an interesting study would be the statistical data for multiple personality disorders correlating to fantastical belief in supernatural entities. As far as the OP question of what do ghosts do all day: sounds like they hang out as apparitions in the minds of people...

This has no relation to any sort of vampire.

Ghosts are likened to the bat which go out of its place by night and return to its home by day; because it is like the blind in the day time.

Similarly, ghosts and souls prefer to go out at night: because the sun has set down (sun light and heat hurt ghosts so much), the voices and sounds are hushed by night, and prticularly when the wind is calm or there is no wind.

Moreover, the insects disturb them and birds pierce their ethereal structure.

In addition, smells from restaurants and WC hurt them so much.
