These are patriotic British songs that I think should be the British National Anthem. God Save the Queen? BORING!!!

Rule Britannia is my favourite!

What do you think? Keep the national anthem the same and boring? Or change it for the better? Has anyone got any other suggestions, like a Beetles song or something?

I like all of those. Our current anthem is quite boring (not because I want the UK to become a republic - I don't). Ideally though, it should get rid of any references to a god, and of course it needs to have a verse about laying waste to anyone who gets in the way. Something to strike fear into opponents at sporting events like the NZ Haka!

Land of Hope and Glory is my choice. It's simple enough for your average joe to sing and has the grandeur to match the UK's historic legacy. References to God are fine. The UK is still a Christian majority nation despite what fringe dawkinsnet types may say.

Actually 51% of the population define themselves as non-religious.

British Social Attitudes survey finds most people have no religion, just 41.7% are Christian

LOL. I just had a horrible vision of some atheist commissariat voting to go around London and other historic cities in the UK chiselling out every reference to God from all the monuments and historic buildings.

Knowing some of the wackjob atheists I've spoken to, they'd probably do it too, if England ever becomes a completely Godless country.

Doesn't that survey have a sample size of around 3000? I think I'll go with the findings of the ONS census, which was much more comprehensive.

Most Brits don't really care if there are or are not references to god. It is a complete non-issue.

Yea, I agree, take out any god reference... By the way I'm not atheist, I'm agnostic, and I think that 51% is mostly made up of Brits who want to keep open minded, rather than closed! I mean there's so many believes and religions out there, such as ones that create wars like Christianity or Islam, ones that are wacky such as Aliens created us, or even depressing believes such as atheism - Any of those could be as true as one another, that's why I keep my mind open!

But as 51% of Brits are non-religious, god must be taken out our national anthem, even if it has to be taken out... Rather than "God save our gracious queen" maybe "Fate saved our gracious queen" or something...

Specific to England, rather than the UK as a whole, but 55% of respondents to a BBC survey on an English national anthem chose Land of Hope Glory. Another favourite is Jerusalem:

Highly unlikely, if current anglo-american academic trends are any indication.
