I believe the way I pronounce fortune is more like for-chen. I went to Merriam-Webster.com for a confirmation of a pronunciation and it does sound that way to me.

Yes. 4-choon here. I don't know how they pronounce it in the UK but in the US it's fore-choon.

Hang on--here's a Canadian who talks almost exactly the way we do where I live and yet she says For-chun. She even says that's proper but to me it sounds weird. There's a whole list of similar words and it's sort of interesting. How do you pronounce "mature"? She says you can say ma-chur or ma-ture. I say ma-ture with T. My Brit dh says ma-chur.

I've never heard it pronounced that way except on tv. Wheel of For-Chun.
