Or any international competition where Scotland were not competing...

I think I remember hearing somewhere that a lot of Scots would be cheering for any team playing England, and generally wouldn't go for them, but then I'm sure a lot would also be going for England since they're the closest country to them. Which do you feel would be more the case? Or would they be largely apathetic about England's success or failure? What about the Welsh?

It is impossible to be apathetic to England's success or failure because you get it rammed down your throat 24/7 by the national media.

For example, when England play in the World Cup, the media have them winning it before a ball is kicked. As a result, we Scots always love it when they - inevitably - end up getting knocked out.

In fact, more entertaining than them actually losing, is watching the post-mortems and trying to guess who this year's scapegoat is going to be.

I cheered on Scotland many years ago when they were in the World Cup Finals and England were not. Shame the Scots can't do the same for us.

Totally agree. I used to support the Home Nations when they were up against 'Johnny Foreigner' but this pettiness is sad.

Oh, and I can't stand the hype in the media surrounding the England football team. It's wildly optimistic and daft.

You're right Jezer. I gave up on dreaming England would ever win the World Cup again about, hmmm, 1990.
But, my son lived in Scotland for about 15 years. He said the venom poured at the England team by Scots viewers in pubs was horrible. Not banter, real hate, and great joy all round when they were defeated.

There are some who love nothing more than to see England lose, just as there are some who want to see England win. However, most people don't have a strong opinion either way.

Maybe what you guys should do in have a print lockdown or something 2 weeks before any WC match. That should work.
It's the talk and bs that kills you. Fail to plan, plan to fail. Maybe England should look at the WC on a 'War' footing. Just 'keep calm and carry on' when the bs flies. I mean England isn't too 'shabby' on the pitch, you know? Well you are in the greatest international football league.

I don't watch football but I support all four teams in other sports. I don't think the same is true of most Scots, Welsh or Irish.

I've never seen the World Cup referred to as the WC, but that may well be the case after it's held in Russia and Qatar.
