Thanks to all. I am enjoying this immensely, and becoming educated about English football at the same time.

Tell me, though. Do they play the game in Scotland and Ireland, as well (or is that an overly awkward query....)?

I've never had a prawn sandwich, but it sounds delicious. In New Orleans, Louisiana, I believe they have a variant called a Po'boy.

Hmm. I DO have an English friend from Bootle....

(Although that sounds suspiciously like the first line of a limerick.... )

You can't just manufacture affection just like that. Like true love, it will come to you. Whatever team you choose though, please don't refer to them as "we"; it sounds a bit pretentious when you don't even understand the accent and vocabulary of the locals. Accept you'll never be one of them.

You get your typical American "massive Liverpool fan" or whatever complaining on YouTube videos because he can't understand Scousers and he wants subtitles. Don't be that person.

And please, try to avoid words like "rooters".

T20? Twenty20? Is cricket trying to become hip? First the garish jerseys and now funky names?

I'm not sure if "hip" is the right word, but certainly the sport is trying to be less stodgy and more fast-paced and spectator-friendly to retain younger audiences. Surely you know (maybe not?) that Twenty20 refers to each side having a maximum of 20 overs.

I'm a prisoner of geographic argot. Suggest an alternative.
