It was on a docu I saw once about the Falkland War. I'm sure it wasn't a lot of people, but it was anecdotally noted. The point is that during that war the Brits were just as much flag waving as Americans.

On another note, I do believe the BBC has an anti-american slant. Has anyone ever read over the Have Your Say comments? Invariably the topic is about America or Americans and phrased in such a way as to provoke negative responses. Something like "Is America right to promote a unilateral foreign policy?" or "Is America the main cause of global warming?", etc. etc. And as expected many of the comments from Brits are downright hateful. I've been to Britain many times and found almost all British people to be very polite and friendly to a fault. However, the BBC site is a whole other story.

Agreed about the BBC, and the Guardian newspaper more so. The tone of some of their post-Katrina coverage in particular was quite unpleasantly smug. A lot of what you get with them is anti-British as well as anti-American - a month or two back I was listening to a late-night radio phone-in when they had a debate on whether church schools should serve halal meat at lunchtime and I turned it off when they had two Muslims arguing it with just one Christian.

I wouldn't take much notice of stuff like Have Your Say, because as you get on here politics forums just attract right-wing oddballs full of hate who've got an axe to grind against something. I just laugh when I read some of the pure nonsense some people seem to think about Britain/Europe/whatever. They're pretty gullible, too - once I managed to get people believing in France it was illegal to fire an employee and everybody was legally entitled to a minimum 5% annual raise

If anything some readers of the Guardian are starting to complain that the paper's coverage is becoming too focused on America. You can now actually choose to view the American version of the Guardian online or the British. Some British readers of the paper complain that there is too much emphasis on America.

British newspapers have obviously opened up alot to embrace American audiences and have proved very successful in doing so whether a tabloid like the Mail or a more respectable broadsheet like the Guardian.

There are some writers I respect on the Guardian and some I can't abhor but I don't think the tone of the paper is anti-American at all. For one thing the staff that cover the American edition are usually American columnists so no matter how opinionated and dogmatic these articles may be they usually reflect the views of many people living in America itself.

As for Harold Wilson being blamed for not intervening in Vietnam I'd say that history has proved him right on this issue. The war was hardly universally embraced in America at the time either.

But the relationship is still stronger than any of those countries.
