But our media is a complete and total joke. It has been biased for decades but it's absolutely abhorrent now.
Is it like that with you guys, too? I was over there in 2002, and at that time everything seemed pretty peaceful, like everyone got along. I wasn't there long enough to look as deep as I would have liked.
Literally every single news network except one is clearly trying to brainwash Americans, and I've seen it actually working, which scares me half to death.
Historically, newspapers in the US were totally biased. They reflected the bias of the owner. Go to a library and look for old newspapers which will probably be on microfilm or microfiche. If you get PBS you can watch newscasts from BBC and DW. You can make your own determination of those two European networks.
Because there are a lot more choices these days for our media diet, it's incumbent on the consumer to be more aware. There are good and bad mouthpieces on both left and right. The good are the non-sensational ones.
You have to decide whether you want to be a passive or assertive consumer, while also trying to achieve balance. Your mileage may vary.
The BBC is biased and very left wing. I don't think many would dispute that.
I read a variety of publications in the hopes of getting a balanced view - the Guardian, the Telegraph and the Spectator.
I don't read the gutter press newspapers (the Sun, Daily Mail, etc.)
I listen to LBC (talk radio). I think our talk radio is a lot more civilised than what you have in the US with your ranting right wingers.
What is LBC? I like to listen to BBC 5 Live over here but it might be nice to have something else too.
We used to have great talk radio but it's mostly all gone now except for the right wing crazy stuff. The talk radio station I used to always listen to in Boston MA has had to downsize so that the talk is only from 8pm to 4am and the rest is news or hours long advertisements. Over here, radio has died.

Not so, you can listen to NPR via the interwebs. I'm listening right now.
My local, WAMU, is 24 hour talk, (11pm - 5am they carry BBC world service), except on the weekends. Similar for the others, I believe.
KQED-FM – KQED Public Radio – San Francisco, CA
WAMU-FM – WAMU 88.5 – Washington, D.C.
WNYC-FM – WNYC Radio – New York, NY
The media is THE PROBLEM. The problem with the media is that it acts as the eyes and ears of the wider community minus the care and concern, and with a side serving of partisan politics and advertising.
I hear people telling me of how they're terrified to leave the house due to reports of crime on the TV, yet the worst thing they've encountered is that someone stole a birdfeeder from their front yard 12 years ago. Luckily, they can buy an overpriced security system that was advertised during the commercial break. Perhaps if they vote a particular way next election, they can go back to feeling secure in their own home.
The panacea to media influence is to take an active interest in your community and neighbours. My personal opinion is that the powers-that-be detest communities because they take the power away from the fear-mongering media.
