We are a family of 4 with children aged 5 & 7 and are planning to move to England next year (from NZ) to live for around 10 months. We have no idea where to live?? We are pretty flexible as to where we can live as my husband will be working remotely. We don't want to be right in London but also don't want to go to a sleepy town (as we currently live in one). So we're looking for a vibrant city with good primary schools - help!

Any ideas/recommendations would be much appreciated!
Thanks

You must have an idea where 'remote' your hubby will be working surely? Give a clue and suggestions will follow. Obviously London wouldn't suit, but compared to New Zealand, England has a lot of potential places worthy of consideration with vibrancy and urban feel, but would still need to know roughly the area of proposed locality.

Hi, Phillippa
Won't your husband need to visit the office occasionally? So if he's working for a London-based company then Cornwall or Northumbria might be a tad inconvenient!
Do you guys have UK citizenship? If not you know you have to get visas sorted out before you travel - yes?
I think schools may be a problem if you are only going to be in the UK for less than a year but hopefully someone else can chime in on that topic..

Would need some more information about your hobbies and interests, and needs. A big requirement would be for example easy access to an international airport.

My default answer without knowing any more info would be Bristol as it's a really nice spot with lots of history & lots of life with a big university.

My husband will be working remotely for his current NZ employer who have no links to the UK so will solely be working from home.
Yes myself and the girls have British Passports so only my husband will need a visa.
Being not too far from an airport would be good although we are planning to do most of our travelling around (eg Europe) before we settle in the UK.
Thanks, will have a look at Bristol.

Hi Phillippa
I think you have a problem in that case. It's something that catches out lots of people. The UK makes no legal distinction between working locally and working remotely. To work in any capacity your husband must have a work visa and to get one he must have a sponsoring employer in the UK. I don't believe there is any way round this but if you can find one please update this thread as it would be usefull information to many.
If you were settling in the UK for good, you, as a British citizen, could sponsor your husband for a spouse visa (which would allow him to work) but I don't think it's feasable to do that just for 10 months unless you have extensive savings and are prepared to spend a lot of money.

If your husband is under 31 years old, then he can qualify for Tier 5 Youth Mobility Scheme. Or, since you are a British citizen, then there is probably a spousal visa he can qualify for.

To answer your original question, check out Brighton, which is very handy for Gatwick Airport.

If the usual work visas don't apply, maybe this one does:

Balham & Clapham are good areas of London. A lot of families live here as it's close to the city but not too close. Nice schools and area etc.
