Could anyone tell me the names of some coastal villages/towns in the UK that still have a "working waterfront" (as opposed to a coastal resort town with pleasure boats). Ideally, I'm thinking of places that have a population less than 2000 (and the smaller the better!), but still large enough to have a hotel or tourist lodge and hopefully a restaurant/diner/pub, but not a great deal of commercial development otherwise. I come from such a village here in the US (my father has been fishing lobster here for 60+ years) and (someday) would like to visit similar places in the UK. I have kind of fallen in love with (the notion of) visiting Cadgwith on the Lizard, but am interested in knowing more about some other fishing towns, too. And if any of you by some small chance are actually involved in commercial fishing, please send me a PM- I have lots of questions about the actual industry, too!
Thanks!

Dungeness is one of the most beautifully ugly and bleak places I know:

Dungeness

No doubt others will have more traditional suggestions, maybe towards the west country.

I'm not sure about sub 2000 towns but Fraserburgh and Peterhead in the north of Scotland are solid commercial fishing towns, my family has lived up there for generations and my cousin owns a big firm dealing with refrigeration. The herring trade is gone and the trawlers aren't operating like they used to, its larger pursers and shrimp boats and the Russian boats coming off shore to process meal.

A taste of their life is shown in the program "Trawlermen"

More info:

Unfortunately one of the skipper covered was later lost at sea.

Fife has smaller fishing towns, such as Anstruther, which has some of the best fish and chips in the country (Scots like haddock over cod and the restaurants won't serve it if it isn't fresh caught) and a lovely little fishing museum.

The west coast also has a lot of ports and shipbuilding facilities (well, what's left of them).

Of course if you really want remote and small try the Hebridean Islands of Lewis and Harris, or the Shetland Isles.

I love the numerous Cornish fishing villages, places like Mousehole,Mavaggissy,Port Isaac, and the like. They have a real salty feel about them, the boats are grounded when the tide goes out,the gulls can be heard day and night.
It's another world. Cornwall is a great place to visit anyhow to capture a bit of that olde world England charm.

Polperro in Cornwall is totally beautiful, a working fishing village and car free. If you're lucky you can get a cottage overlooking the actual harbour (swans in the harbour too). G.O.R.G.E.O.U.S. Maybe I shouldn't give the secret of it's beauty away.
