Perhaps for most parts of the US, but I believe that the Northeast Corridor trains will always be popular; it's always been this way..

NYC<->Montreal HSR line. SWEET!!!

If only more taxes were relocated to speed up the developments.

-Raise gas taxes. Already heavily subsidized and a dwindling resource.
-More tolls.
-Auto commuter taxes into downtown areas of cities like NYC/D.C./Boston/Philly.

This is all awesome info.

Regarding the original map, that high-speed line running south through Virginia terminates in Charlotte. North Carolina and Virginia got seriously on-the-ball with this about a decade ago, with gradual incremental upgrading of existing track from Charlotte to Washington to high-speed standards, and doubling of track to avoid the freight problem.

Currently the Charlotte-to-Raleigh and Richmond-to-DC segments have been extensively upgraded. NC has done some heavy promotion and awareness campaigns, and ridership on the Charlotte-to-Raleigh segment has steadily climbed.

The missing link is a segment between Durham (NC) and Petersburg (VA), which will be a high-speed segment running on the ROW of an abandoned freight line, the two states are in control of the right of way, but that will be the last completed segment. The ultimate goal is to have true high-speed from Charlotte to Boston - the initial plan (more than a decade back) was a east coast Atlanta-to-Boston, but governors in GA and SC were not on board. As the NC segment has since exceeded all expectations, folks in GA and SC are now getting interested, but they are more than a decade behind, and costs have climbed, so I seriously doubt we'll see it go south of Charlotte in the forseeable future. This is a shame - if Charlotte, Raleigh and Richmond (the smallest of the "big" MSAs between Atlanta and Boston) are still large enough to generate enough local traffic, Atlanta should have been a no-brainer.

I'm not sure about VA, but the major NC cities along the route have new stations with future capacity built in, so they can accomodate a lot of future growth/ridership. The southern terminus - the new station in downtown Charlotte - is in a multimodal transit facility that links into local light rail (which has likewise performed far better than anyone would expect in a Sunbelt city) and functions as the city bus hub, so trains terminating in Charlotte will link you straight into a solid local network.
