I am clearly a fan of rail systems (and bus systems) in metro areas, and see each as serving a distinct purpose to optimize transit for the whole population.

I do not understand, however, the fanaticism of some groups for specific public transit modes.

BayRailAlliance's Caltrain Metro East, for example, would require new right-of-way but, largely, be a redundant system. Caltrain already serves SJ Mineta via the Santa Clara station and an airport-centric bus line. The BART extensions would connect the east Bay area with downtown SJ, Diridon station, the Santa Clara Caltrain station, and the SJ airport.

So why propose such a competing system?

LightRailNow is absolutely anti-bus, repeatedly and at length deriding proposed BRT lines, even when the area is currently underserved and without the political will for a rail system. If it's BRT or nothing, I'd take BRT. LightRailNow's staff doesn't seem to share this view.

Do you have any examples of these all-or-nothing views? Why do they arise? How do you combat them?
