this seems like a really bad idea to let these monster cruise ships dock at these old historic sites. a big cruise ship called Costa Concordia ran aground in Tuscany Italy just last year but apparently they haven't learned anything from that disaster. look at the size of that thing. it looks like Godzilla rising out of the water and about to stomp the city flat.
"It's impossible that there could be another Concordia in Venice," Massimo Bernardo, head of the Venice Cruise Committee, told AFP in an interview. "An order from Venice coast guards states that two pilots and two tug boats have to be deployed during the manoeuvre as well as the captain," he said.
it happened before so how would it be impossible for it to happen again?

Well that's why maritime and harbor pilots make incredible salaries. In the US they make an average of $400,000/year. The real problems that "monster" cruise ships cause is that they overwhelm small island nations with thousands of douchebag tourist and end up washing out all the great culture those once exotic places had to offer. Basically turning them into Disneyland. Not to mention that Naval Architecture has gone way way WAAAAAAY down hill. Seriously, a cruise ship is just a bland stack of condos on top of a bland hull. What happend to the grace and class of the great TransAtlantic liners? The great and innovative man who designed Normandie is rolling over in his grave.
So you're going to let one captains recklessness dictate what size ships we can have. If so, maybe we should limit their size to the that of the Titanic.
There are a lot of arguments that could be made for restricting the huge cruise ships from sailing into Venice, but fear of another Concordia is not, as far as I know, one of them. The concerns are more environmental, and what it does to the buildings. I'd be more concerned about those issues, and not spend too much time worrying that one is going to sink in the lagoon. But like so many issues there's no easy answer -- cruise ships bring big money to Venice, after all, although they also cost the city money, too.

Those places are too cultured for the unwashed masses eh? I suppose all that common illcultured money that comes with the tourists isn't good enough either, only self appointed artists and poets should be allowed to visit.
these cruise ships are also a floating environmental disaster for oceans and marine life. the amount of garbage and pollution they produce on a daily basis is incredible. being in international waters they roam the seas unregulated spewing untold amounts of raw sewage and garbage into the oceans each day. they ought to be banned imo or at least severely restricted in their size.

Lets hear the logic that is going to explain how a dozen 'size restricted' cruises are better off that 1 larger one. They will burn less fuel, generate less garbage, and the passengers will poop less?

on land sewage is regulated and generally treated before it is dumped or recycled. but in the open water they are unregulated and dumped raw into the oceans.
cruise ships can be banned by individual countries by simply refusing to allow them to dock or come into the country's terratorial waters. why do these ships have to be so big? they are pointless and stupid.
