TBH I don't think the generation gap between Gen Y and the Boomers is really all that bad. Nothing like the Boomer's and Gen X had with their parents, I think they can understand us pretty well, but there is some misunderstanding and tensions. More than anything, I think people are clashing over competing generational interests.

But the book came out in 1962, just as the oldest of the "Boomers" were coming of age. And the feds took up some of the environmental issues soon afterward. The EPA was founded in 1970. So it sure as h*ll isn't the millennials who started anything; they're building on what's already been done.

The feds who took things up, and the people who founded the EPA were mostly born before 1946 as well. Every generation builds on what was done before - Rachel Carsons and Jane Jacobs built on something much older "The earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof, "
What I admire about the millenials is how much they have taken it to heart, and built it into their daily lives.
