Does anyone have any good books they'd recommend about the state or progress of urban planning in the United States, or something like that?

Try the above link to another thread on "books on urban planning".

Lots of good suggestions and mini reviews there.

Maybe my all time favorite that we had to read in school was Jane Jacobs "The Death and Life of Great American Cities". It was a critique of 1950's planning efforts. I think its still very valid. It can be boring at parts, but her insight into urban planning and cities is amazing.

There are lots of others that we had to read. But this one always stuck with me.. and really influenced my perception of cities and planning for them.

Thoroughly enjoying "Strap Hanger" thanks to this thread. It really has me thinking about the future infrastructure of public transportation within my own city. Not that I'll go into planning anytime soon, but hey, daydreaming on the bus is free...
