For those who don't know. The game is a world made up of blocks. Each block is different materials. The entire world of minecraft is massive. If you want scale, if the whole world was to materialize in our solar system,(from the very bottom block, to the very top of skybox, and all directions) it would be around the size of neptune.
Here's a good explanation

There are basically 2 different play types. Survival and Creative. Survival is more of simply collecting food matierials and building with whatever is around you. Make planks from trees build a home, mine for minterals.

Then there is creative. Creative is where you have unlimited supplies of blocks.

Now here is where it can get fun for someone into urban planning. Usually a randomly generated map would generate a small villiage:




You can then start adding to it.







You can even add minecarts as transit.
