Another utopian plan?
Chilling predictions say by 2050, about 95% of North Jakarta will be submerged underwater. So they developed a plan to move entire city of 11M (!) people 1,300 miles away to a huge island full of chilling jungle tribes - Borneo
Confiscation of customary lands and criminalisation of indigenous people when they try to defend their rights will happen. Plus ecological damage.
The first part is set to move this year.
Construction work on Indonesia's new capital city Nusantara is underway, with over 200,000 construction workers working fast to met the deadline.
The move will cost about $32 B
Roads and buildings are being erected at impressive speeds as the once towering trees have been chopped down to make some room.
The main goal is to build a smart new city, a new city that is competitive at the global level: zero emissions, solar plants, only electric vehicles and bikes by 2030. No more congestion, floods and severe air pollution.
However, the project is running short on funds and behind schedule.
Under current rules, Jakarta will remain Indonesia's capital until the president issues a decree officially naming Nusantara as the new capital, which is expected sometime this year.
