The sources I found all gave household. I'm not sure that "family" would exclude university students, if they're living together in an apt. What's your source? Mine is the census bureau.

The census defines a family as two or more people related. So childless couples count, as well a single-parent household. Students living away from home, unless married don't.

I've wondered if this is the case myself. However, in Europe, where there are vastly more walkable areas, there is still rather high demand for the most walkable environments. This seems to suggest it's not merely a supply/demand issue.
To some its important and to others its not. often a person living in a large city does not live in the overall city but within neighborhood. Many things can be very different on one areas from anther as seen when people ask about crime in a area or schools. Then in a large city its expensive and time consuming to travel to shops etc in another area constantly.

Many city residents rarely leave their neighborhood. Some have never been to the downtown area. Yes, even New York.
Yeah, not leaving your neighborhood in new york city would kind of defeat the purpose of living in new york city. In a city where most if not all amenities are accessible by public transportation, you'd have to have an extensive list of excuses to pay rent there and never leave your apt.
