Note the 15% is just for any county in the MSA, it doesn't have to be in city commuting. So if a county just outside the MSA has 15% of its commuters commuting into the adjacent county inside the MSA, it's in the CSA.
No western city would end on the bottom, and some, especially Californian ones, would make the top of the list. The scale of post-WWII growth is large enough that the ranking is based mainly on how low density recent growth. Of the top 20 largest urban areas, only Atlanta is denser than Boston. Of course, the typical Boston resident lives at denser (for some much denser) neighborhoods than the typical Atlanta resident. But the enormous large lot burbs plus their rather spotty design lowers Boston's numbers.
So much for this vilification of the west that happens on this forum (not you, nei, you're the "mythbuster").

For San Joaquin, lots of people commute to Santa Clara County bumping it up pretty easily. And still a few more will commute to even the nearby Alameda County places. So it was only a matter of time. Sacramento might merge too in the next few years.
Housing prices are just so ridiculous, they are easily half the price of the Bay Area in Sacramento and San Joaquin counties. You can barely find a 1 bedroom condo in the immediate Bay Area for the price of a 3 bedroom large lot home in those counties.
My county is 1500 square miles and has a density of 89.9 people per square mile.
The three urban areas (Jamestown, Dunkirk, Fredonia) have a combined area of 18.8 square miles, which means the rest of the county has a population density of 57 people per square mile.
For me in Oakland, CA:
