Road work can't be fine-tuned to such an extent that they can put the barrels up 1 minute before starting work and take them down 1 minute after finishing. It's just not feasible. After all, the same people who move the barrels are the ones who do the work itself; so obviously they can't be doing both at the same time. As for why not open the road if no work was being done, you don't know what kind of prep work needed to be done on the closed lanes to get ready for the construction, or to let the finished work set properly before reopening the lanes.

Mods, please move this to the Urban Planning forum.
It all started with one guy towing a boat who was frustrated sitting in the traffic...once he moved the barrels and drove off, a semi truck followed suit, and then another car...once this happened, it was like a damn broke, cars left and right started flowing into the closed section, Ive never seen anything like it.

From what Ive seen on the roads around here, if drivers see another driver doing something, they are more likely to do the same thing, Ive seen this with multiple people running red lights before, they see the car ahead of them do it and they feel more comfortable doing it.

So the solution is to get people to move out of the region where traffic is bad?

No, there are too many people everywhere. We need a cleansing or purge of people. This non sense of dealing with idiots is very tiring.

*Correction, there are too many cars everywhere.

I would bet my life that you are just as stupid as most other humans. Would you take that bet?

True. The fact that Snowpacked made this mistake and you needed to correct him is enough reason why this idiot needs to be purged immediately.

Its because Americans refuse to step on the gas and get moving. Anyone who has travelled knows what I am talking about.

American sees the traffic light turn green they sit there all stupid then take off real slow, then the next car same thing, stupid hesitation then real slow acceleration.

Only 6 cars make the light then you must wait again.

From what Ive seen of traffic jams on the main roads here (non-expressway), its the traffic lights and how they are timed, that causes majority of the back ups...

There is one stretch in particular, I was stopped at the red light (first in line), when it turned green, I took off and the next light down the road, was timed PRECISELY, so cars, coming from that light, would be stuck at this red light too, its like the engineers timed how long it would take for a car to take off, get up to speed and reach the next light, and set the light so drivers would get consecutive red lights in a row....

If they can set lights so drivers get all reds consecutively, in theory, they COULD set them so drivers get all green lights too, so Im not sure what purpose there would be in making sure drivers get consecutive red lights...this suggests that they are intentionally causing traffic imo.
I completely agree with this. It's the same in Seattle. Traffic lights are terrible and seems like they were set up that way on purpose to create more traffic...
