Forgive me, but I have Associated Press style flowing through my veins.

Street designators aren't abbreviated in AP style unless they're part of addresses (e.g., 324 E. 36th St.); when used to describe the streets themselves, they're spelled out in full: North Broad Street, Seventh Avenue (following the AP rule of spelling out numbers below ten).

At the magazine I write for, the designators and compass points are spelled out even when they are part of addresses.

In many cities, grids are not practical due to topography, water barriers, etc. In others, the roads are deliberately random and confusing to stall invaders.
