I think that you mean block. I'd say that something like 125m by 75-100m is ideal for US uses.
The block you are referring to maybe 37.5 to 50 meters deep, if we half it. I am after the length of the street, or how long to traverse it, or from one end to the other (as Dwatted Wabbit said).

Half a mile, the longest distance one could see by naked eyes what's there , in the furthest point, say a house or a tree etc without the need to get on a bus or a car
moreover longeer roads tend to lose their identity, if a road is 5 miles long it doesn't say anything of you if you just tell one "I live on that road" without sayin anyhting else...
In terms of urban planning, street length doesn't matter.
Street width, however, matters a great deal, because the wider streets are, the faster people drive, which makes for a less safe environment for pedestrians.
Block length also matters in terms of urban planning, because "superblocks" tend to dissuade people from walking.
The street names here often connote position not length. My Street for instance is always west of B Avenue and East of D Avenue. But it is not contiguous. That is there are at least a dozen segments of My Street which do not connect spread over 10 miles. Locals know you use a section line street to get near the number then turn in the proper direction.
