Hi,

I would like to know whether all countries have independent private town planning companies, or is it just the case with South Africa?

In South Africa, the town planning function was initially carried out solely by the government. However, over time, the demand for town planning services increased, and the private sector saw an opportunity to provide these services. This led to the rise of private townplanners, which offered a range of services, including town planning and urban design, property development, and land use management.

The growth of the private town planning sector was also driven by the increasing complexity of urban development projects and the need for specialized expertise. Private town planners were able to provide this expertise, and they were able to offer their services to a wide range of clients, including private developers, local governments, and community groups.

Additionally, the government's approach to town planning was undergoing significant changes during this time, with a shift towards more participatory and consultative processes. This created further opportunities for the private sector, as they were able to offer expertise in facilitating these processes and engaging with various stakeholders.

Overall, the growth of the private [Mod cut: removed link] sector in South Africa was driven by a combination of increased demand for services, the need for specialized expertise, and changes in the government's approach to town planning.

In the US much of local Planning and Zoning is carried out by government employees under the direction of a P and Z Commission which adopts the Zoning Codes and Comprehensive Plans. You might have a Director of Planning, an employee, directing the employees in the implementation of the codes and plans.

Often they will hire private professional planners to rewrite the Zoning Codes or develop Comprehensive Plans.
