I am taking a country wide road trip and after leaving Moab, I plan on driving 50 W through Nevada.

After realizing exactly where Moab was in relation to the Bonneville Salt Flats, I wanted to go check it out and possibly drive on them.

Due to other deadlines it doesnt seem that I will be able to go past Salt lake city so my question is...

along US 50, is there anything that resembles the Salt Flats of any sort? Any local input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Whatever you end up doing, look a the ground colour,
before you drive on it.
If it is lightly coloured then it is dry.
If it is dark, it is wet, then do NOT drive on it.

Yes there is, but on a much, much smaller scale. There is the Sevier Dry Lake bed. Almost all of the river is used for irrigation, and the rather large lake has no outlet. Almost always its a huge salt bed/bog. It's really not nearly as spectacular as the Salt Flats, though. But it's certainly a white salt bed. And hot. To see it, drive west from Delta on US 50 towards Ely, NV. It's maybe 30 miles out of Delta (I'm working from memory here...) and to the south of the highway. Truthfully, if you like the desert, the drive on US 50 is probably more scenic in general than I 80. Although it's small and really not anything eye-popping, I love the few miles of the King's Canyon area. That's just west of Notch Peak and Tule Valley. The drive over the mountains east of Ely is quite pretty as well. Have fun.

For not *loving* the dessert, you are taking a road that will make you say : *Once is enough*.

Keep plenty of water and some camping gear with you for Justin Case.

I hope you are NOT doing this by yourself ???
If you do, do not take any chances !!!

I second that !!!
Beauty of an area does NOT have to be green !
When looking at a desert area, I think the word *awesome* comes to mind rather than *pretty* ...

US 50 through the Great Basin of Utah and into Nevada has been called the "loneliest road in America" before. I drove US 50 once with Dad years ago. Do follow the advice you are getting here and visit Great Basin National Park. Its a small park, but very pretty the way it stands out in the desert mountains as a green oasis. Take the time to arrange a tour through Lehman Cave inside the park. Its definitely worth a visit. When you get to Ely, Nevada (about 50 miles beyond Great Basin NP) enjoy yourself and look around. Its not much, but its the last real community you'll see until you get near Reno. If you are in Ely at the right time and have a couple of hours to spare than take a short train ride on the "Ghost Train". Its an old steam train that's been restored and is operating. Once you leave Ely you are looking at driving through a huge amount of desert for hundreds of miles. Until you get to Fallon which takes you the Reno/Tahoe area you'll see little else. One community in the middle of the state is a town called Austin. Its very small. I'm not sure there are more than a thousand people there. Take water with you and make sure your car is in good mechanical condition. I would imagine having to get your car towed and fixed anywhere on US 50 in Nevada would be an extremely expensive proposition. Make sure you don't fall asleep and watch out for semi trailer trucks coming the other direction.
