I'll be travelling from Ely, NV to the Grand Canyon in a couple of weeks. So far, my shortest route seems to go thru St. George, thru Hilldale and CC, and over to Fredonia and the 89a (or 89) on to the Grand Canyon. After today's court ruling, will they be unwelcolming to traffic comming thru? I wont be stopping, just want to drive thru.

Yes, it is safe. You will be traveling along a main highway. To go into the towns you pretty much need to exit...My curiosity has taken me in there before and even in town, in my case no one as much as looked at me...( Maybe they are used to lookie-loos ? ) I think more than anything these people just want to be left alone.....
Have a fun/safe vacation...

Oh, the Jeff's "verdict." When the poster wrote "court ruling," I thought there had been some sort of landmark appellate court decision regarding interstate travel.

Ok, but I have a similar question. Some friends of mine will be visiting the area from another state and would like to do a little exploring. They asked me about Hilldale and if they could drive through there to take a look. BUT, they are an inter-racial couple (black and white/asian) and they asked me the same question, will they be safe to drive around town or should they forget driving through there altogether. I didn't know how to answer.

I don't understand the safety concerns, I guess. We're talking about polygamists here, not Hell's Angels. I don't think they're going to kidnap you from your car and force you into an underage marriage. I suppose they might be upset about Warren Jeffs, but I don't think they're rioting or anything.

I've never been down there, so I could be completely wrong. Maybe they all tote shotguns around town, who knows? I personally wouldn't worry about driving through, though.

I find that it is totally safe altho you should develope a thick skin as many people may give you some cold stares.

Stop in at the restaurant [I THINK it's "The Merry Wives"] one of the names in contention when they opened it was "The Three Little Plygs".

They are opening themselves up to the outside world slowly....just don't point n laugh.....or they may point n shoot lol

Actually, if they applied a little imagination and some business acumen, the group could make a ton of money. When I was stationed on the East Coast in the early 70s, my wife and I liked to compete in the various time and distance auto rallies that ran through Pennsylvania. I noted the Amish did a pretty healthy trade with the tourists. All the Utah group needs to do is develop a line of identifiable but marketable commodities, and they would probably stand to make a healthy profit. (no pun intended.)
