I notice that most of the homes in the Utah Valley area have asphault shingle roofs and vinyl siding, as well as bare wood exposed eaves. How often do you end up replacing/re-painting these items in this area? Seems like homes would be a lot of maintenance here?

In some parts of the country, these would be higher maintenance but not in Utah. As to how often you have to replace a roof, it depends on the quality of the shingles. Some shingles will last 20 to 30 years, and some 10 depending on the quality. They may be guaranteed for 20 or more years by the manufacturer for labor and materials depending on the quality. Again paint will depend on the quality used.

The air is fairly dry in the area, and does not have the high heat as in the desert southwest. This helps them last longer than some parts of the country.

Add a condition to this where it all depends on how much longer the installer is doing business.
A bus runs him over, your warrantee is worth diddly squat ...
Been there, done that.

When it comes to siding, we chose aluminium, rather than vinyl.
