I have lived in Utah for only about 3 months and work in the animal care field. Compared to most other states I've been in I am so saddened at the lack of care and respect for the loving pets God gave people. Too many people want to have a pet but don't want to spend money to take care of them, especially when they are sick or not properly taken care of like when they get out and get hit by cars because they are off leash or not in a fenced yard, shot, attacked by another animal, or a number of other things. Even when they are sick I see a LOT of people who don't take their pet to a veterinarian as soon as a pet appears to be ill and then it becomes an emergency and then there is complaining about the cost of animal emergency care, and a lot of animals just suffer and/or die. God did not create them to be mistreated or neglected.
God gave us pets to love us and for us to love. For people who are not willing to love and take proper care of their pets, (which includes medical care), or if you cannot afford it, be kind enough to give them to someone who will take proper care of them and who will not be so selfish to think they don't deserve to have money spent on them when they need care. They are living, feeling, loving beings that God created just like He created you and me. I wouldn't let you lay in bed sick or hurt and refuse to get you medical attention if you needed it; pets can't take themselves to an animal hospital, we have to do it for them just like when our children are sick or injured. If you can't afford or don't want to pay for a pets care, please give them to someone who will. And God Bless all of you who do take loving care of your pets.

I know what you mean, I love my dogs and spoil them. These people down the street have no fence and tie off their small poodle, it stays out their 24/7, rain or snow. The poor thing just sits there looking at the house, hoping for some affection. My dogs are trained and when it snows they stay inside all day while I'm at work.

Have you even been to Upstate NY or backwoods TN? I've seen some pretty crazy animal neglect in those areas also. Unforutnately I don't think animal neglect is a local thing. Many people who have animals can barely take are of themselves and their families. Search for Cat ladies on google images.

That is the point. If you can't afford a pet financially or time wise, why bother getting one and forcing it to suffer?

I live in Fort Collins, CO. and I must say that people here take excellent care of their pets. Most people here walk their dogs everyday and the pets I have seen look healthy. They turn it into a workout. When I lived in Utah(small town)the local pound was exterminating unwanted dogs and cats by the dozens because nobody would fix their animals or there would be outbreaks of Parvo and Distemper or feline HIV. Sad.
