I will be in the Moab area in August. Can anyone tell me a good place to find snakes? Also, what time of day would I most likely find one? I like to photograph them.

Actually, yes! All kinds of snakes. I have photographed rattlesnakes in the past in Florida (Eastern Diamondbacks) and Georgia (Timber rattlers). I wouldn't mind finding a Midget Faded Rattler out there in Moab. They are beautiful snakes.

i try to find snakes too. i think that all of them know i am coming, cuz it's been a while since i've seen any. i was the only one in my squad in iraq that never ran into a cobra. and i was the one searching for 'em.

in the utah desert, daytime. they like to sun themselves on the rocks. in some really hot places they like to come out at night. phantom ranch for instance. sometimes they get stuck in slot canyons and are easy to find. have to be careful where you put your hands in any red rock climbing out here. a human's handhold is pretty often a rattlesnake's idea of a good sunning rock.

There is a beautiful pattern that I love to see on snakes. It's called tire tracks.

I've seen several rattlers around the middle of May along the Devil's Garden Trail at the back end of Arches....more spefifically along the Primitive Trail that extends the Devils's Garden Trail. Sidewinders and Westerns.
