With some help and necessary corrections from the locals of course, hopefully there will be no heated arguments over which is the correct one if two or more present themselves.

Tooele: Pronounced "Tow" as in towing a trailer, and "Ella" as in Ella Fitzgerald.....Towella

Oquirrh: Take "Okra" as in fried okra, chop the "a" off the end and soften the "r"......Okr, or Okur

Weber: Add another "e"......Weeber as in "Weeber Canyon"

Wanship???? Does the "a" sound like it would in the word "want" or if it wher in the word "stand" or yet again in the word "state"....?

I'll go with the sound in the word "stand"....Waanship

And so is Herriman pronounced like "hurry" and "man"...Hurryman?

Or like the man's name "Herman" wiht the "i" thrown in as it would sound in the word 'knit"....Heriman?

Albion? Alta? Kamas?........

I've always heard it pronounced as "too" + "ill" + "uh": tooilluh. Others thoughts? My most favorite mispronunciation I've heard of it by someone from the northeast was "toolie."

I believe it's pronounced "hair" + "ih" + "mun": hairimun

Another one is Bonneville which is pronounced "Bahn" + "uh" + "vil": Bahnuhvil. Not "Bonnie" + "ville"

Before I heard it pronounced by an anchor on a KSL clip I thought it was "two" and "eel" as in "morey eel".....Twoeel....LOL

I suppose Bonneville will always be Bonnie-Ville to a Scotsman.

My version:

Tooele: Too ill' uh (but we call it Toolie all the time)

Oquirrh: O' ker

Weber: Wee' ber

Wanship: Wan' ship /a/ as in want

Herriman: Hair' uh mun

Albion: Al' bee un /al/ as in Allen

Alta: Al' tuh /al/ as in Allen

Kamas: Kam' us /a/ as in Allen

Another favorite

Hurricane: Her' uh cun with the middle syllable barely voiced

All stressed on the first syllable except Tooele

You forgot my favorite: Duchesne

I've heard so many people slaughter that one. Most common blooper is dooch-ez-nee. I've also heard dutchess-n and dutch-ez-nee

All together now... doosh-ay-n

So Herriman escapes the indignity of a man in a hurry only to be saddled with one who is hairy....

The locals all say Al / tuh.....most east coasters say All / tuh....locals of course correct.

Tooele, is actually pronounced Too-Ill-A.

Hooper is not like Mr. Hooper from Sesame Street. It is pronounced like Hooker, only with a P.

That might actually be the correct way to pronounce it, but the only way I've ever heard it pronounced by us locals is "too-illa."

Oker. Rhymes with joker.

Weber: Add another "e"......Weeber as in "Weeber Canyon"
Weber and Heber also rhyme. Imagining another 'e' is a good way to remember that it's a long 'e'. If it were a short 'e', it would be spelled Webber. Heber would be spelled Hebber.

It's like the 'a' in 'want.'

It's hair-i-mun (with a short 'i' like in 'it').

All have a short 'a' sound in the first syllable. The easiest way to spot an out-of-stater is when they tell you they loved the skiing at "Ahl-tuh." Think "alti-tude."

And then, of course, there's Hurricane, pronounced "Hur-i-cun." Sounds sloppy, but that's how it is.

I remember being down in Bryce Canyon once and hearing someone say she was going to hike the Nuh-VAH-joe loop. She had read the sign pointing to the trailhead. It said "Navajo Loop."
