My husband and I recently finished our degrees (Mechanical Engineering and Registered Dietitian, respectively) and looking to relocate from Indiana. We lived in Murray and SLC before as renters and are looking to find the perfect place to lay down roots. Below is our list of musts. Thanks is advance for you recommendations!.

1) quiet/scenic area with space between neighbors. No neighborhoods. Mountains, lake/creek, woods are bonuses. No HOA. At least .5 acre
2) good middle and high schools (reasonably priced private school is possible)
3) solid grocery store within 15 minutes.
4) additional ammentities (movie theaters/shopping) within 30 minutes.
5) close proximity to nice terrain hiking areas
6) within 1 hour drive of SLC (including traffic)
7) home prices $300-$500K (moderate fixer-upper acceptable). Backyard with a creek or something is a super bonus.
8) good WiFi/cell service is a must
9) overall quiet/scenic/tranquil

Holiday might work for you, but you'd definitely be spending $500K on the home to get what you're looking for.

For 0.5+ acre and space between neighbors I don't think $500k in Holladay is nearly enough, though some neighborhoods fit the OPs description. I was thinking Emigration Canyon, but that's as expensive or worse.

I agree that Ogden Valley meets most of your criteria, and probably suits your price range as well. It's still fairly rural and large .5+ acre lots are common. Probably some suitable homes in Pleasant View, North Ogden, Uintah, and high on the hillside in South Ogden as well.

As a plus the job market for mechanical engineers is fairly strong in Northern Utah due to some emerging defense programs.
In the post-Challenger redesign era, Thiokol (which since merged into Orbital ATK) sought out aeros and mechanicals from from Purdue, so your Indiana roots may serve hubby well in his job hunt.

Default Daybreak?

Why not Daybreak? It has a lot of the amenities you're looking for and the home prices are modest. I recently just moved there and am very happy with the cost of living. It's easy to access more populated areas and is pretty quiet. I usually get into the city via Utah Transit Authority

But not the land.

Emigration canyon has a few 1+ acre lots for sale ranging from $25k-$300k which would be within the $500k even after a new construction home were built. Only downside is that a lot of the sellers are very flakey, have no knowledge of how real estate sales work, and are difficult to get a hold of. If you have the patience to deal with FSBO idiots, there's some potential for prime real estate up there.

I'd be astounded if anybody could actually buy an acre and build a house up there for under $500k. And unless I'm quite mistaken it's also well and septic up there - not a problem in my mind (though it is for many), but a significant additional expense.
