There are definitely plus-es to having a basement. You can do TONS with it. I agree, you will get an older house for about 200K, but if you really look around, you can still find decent houses in that price range.

Check out Murray, Sandy, Draper, Highland, Cottonwood Heights, Eagle Mountain, Taylorsville, South Jordan. I don't know zip codes, but there are some nice areas in those cities.

Wow...am I getting an eye-opener on housing costs in Utah!! I didn't know we were so spoiled here in Idaho. We bought our 5+ BR house here, 3/4 acre, for $114,000 just 6 yrs ago. We're thinking about listing it for maybe $180,000 which seems about avg here. I've been going through Real Estate ads for the past week and 5 BR's are $105,000 - $270,000 (and some high ritzy ones of course.) So we were really hoping to find a 4 BR house in Pleasant Grove, Orem, Spanish Fork area for $170,000-$190,000. No such thing huh?

(By the way, if anyone is looking to move to South Eastern Idaho I made up a list today of 4-6 BR, single-family residences by price. Even included 3 BR which stated poss add-ons in basement.) Maybe I should make a site for that?

Guess we're definitely going to need to look at some of the smaller towns.

abnelson, when my parents moved here, they sold their 5-bd 2-ba 1/3 acre culdesac home in SE Idaho for 25K LESS than they paid for their 2-bd 1-ba condo in Orem. They had their home paid off, but they had to get a mortgage to get into a condo! The difference in housing prices is very real, and does make it hard to move unless you're getting a commensurate pay raise. Idaho's been picking up, but unfortunately, so has Utah, so the price difference is still huge.

You will find homes a little more affordable if you look south (Payson, Santaquin) or if you leave the Wasatch front altogether and head somewhere like Price. Tooele might be more affordable as well. And Eagle Mountain. Those are quite far to the west, but if you're retired and not commuting every day, it might not matter (plus Tooele is actually near freeways, but Eagle Mtn isn't).

I remember thinking this same price range when my wife and I started looking for our first house last year....that sure went out the window quickly lol. Townhomes in our area of Salt Lake are now going for closer to $250K.

What part of SE Idaho did you have pricing info? Paris, Montpelier, Fish Haven....?

Elder Shawn -
Mostly Madison Co, Fremont Co, and Jefferson Co. Mainly cities like Idaho Falls, Shelley, Rigby (really decent prices in Rigby), Rexburg, Sugar City,
and St. Anthony. I pulled some listings out of the newspaper but most out of the Homeseekers realtor magazine. I was only seeking previously owned, large family homes (and no manufactured homes) to get an idea of what to price our home at. If you're interested I'll try to send the list, although I'm new at this site so not sure how to do that.

My parents are thinking about getting a place near Bear Lake. So maybe I was thinking extreme SE Idaho lol. We have a cabin on Bear Lake and love it!!!! It's too cold up there in the winter for me though.

I have lived here over a year and a half, am not Morman and have no friends. I have joined bowling leagues, play golf, fish, baseball and meet TONS of people through work at a pest control company. I am a very friendly, outgoing person and have never been so friendless in my life. I thank God that I love my husband very much and don't mind spending just about every waking moment with him because he is all I have got out here. I have even had Mormans suggest I join their church to meet people. Yikes!!! Never a good reason to join a religious group in my opinion. Lehi, Saratoga Springs or Eagle Mountain might be better.
