I am looking to start a wedding coordinating business in the Salt Lake City Area. Sounds simple but it approachs a different market than full service wedding coordinating (wedding planning form beginning to end). I want to provide service only on the day of the event. Meaning, i would set up the receptions room ( decorations, linens, chair covers, banquet stations...ect), coordinate the arrival of all vendors, placement of all outsourced items and deal with any problems that arise with vendors. I will coordinate a sequence of events with the DJ and caterer and proceed in following the itinerary to schedule. I will deal with porblenms during the event as they arise with minimal interaction with the bride and groom. I will organize and aid in all details concerning traditional events including cake cutting, dollar dance,..etc...I will organize all end of event details including gifts, outstanding debts, rental pick-up, room breakdown...etc... So what do you think...is there a need for this type of service in Salt Lake City?

It sounds like you have a great idea! I'm all for bringing in new businesses. I don't know much about Weddings and how the market is for that out here, so I can't help you much there. But, there are some definete businesses that I would love to see out here. If they're here already, great, but I haven't been able to find them.
1.) restaurant delivery service----you call them tell them what you want from whatever restaurant/eatery they go get it and bring it to you, for a small fee. In California it was called Delivery Express, and they'd bring breakfast or lunch to us at work.

2.) a sandwich/ sub shop like fresh cut subs, or submarina, where the bread is soft and FRESH, and they slice the meat right before your eyes.....mmmm

3.) an internet cafe or office access, where you can use office equipment, computers, faxes, copiers, telephones to take care of personal business. when we relocated out here, I was driving from place trying to find public access to a computer and fax machine and copier, trying to settle the details of buying my home out here.

4.) a full service car wash

I know that there are some things that I will have to get used to doing without, at least until the next road trip out of Utah, such as a good authentic mexican restaurant, or a doughnut shop, or a casino but hey, the things I mentioned above are good doable ideas for a Utah business.

I think there would be a market for it. Weddings are a pretty big business around here. Some go all out with full catering in large reception centers, and some are very simple in church cultural halls, but even the simple ones usually need some sort of basic services such as centerpieces and backdrops. I think there are a lot of wedding services here already, but if you found a niche that wasn't really being serviced well, you could have a great business.

Well unfortunately, many of those things you list
are taken care off well before the wedding day.

As for weddings.. in SLC, all it takes is about
5 minutes going down(or up) I-15 and you'll
see billboards for the next 5 wedding expos(happening in the next 2 weeks)

There really are wedding expos nearly every week.
Lots of marriage around here.
So practically any part of the process you get involved in
has the potential to be profitable.
