I am from out of state and not familiar with this area.

I need help identifiying a safe and more upscale area to live in somewhere between South Salt Lake City and American Fork.

Thank you in advance for all your tips in this respect!

Alpine is very nice, as are a lot of areas in Holladay. Both are south of Salt Lake, Alpine being a bit farther south, closer to American Fork and Holladay acting more like a suburb of SLC, very close to it. Really anywhere east of the 1-15, north of the Point of the Mountain is pretty nice and (depending on the exact area) relatively upscale, but Alpine and Holladay get my votes.

Sandy above 2000 East, Cottonwood Heights. Where will you be working? What type of commute will you tolerate?

Draper is another area worth considering. Not sure what your interpretation of "upscale" is, but Draper offers a variety of homes ranging from around 200K to 2 million plus. Lots of newer homes and neighborhoods, (many with great views), several modern strip malls and supermarkets, short drive to Southtowne Shopping Mall (Dillards, JC Penny, Macy's), easy access to I15. The suburb of Draper itself straddles the "border" between Salt Lake Valley and Utah Valley so you can live in Draper and be in either Salt Lake or Utah County. I live on the Utah County side (15 minutes to American Fork, 20 minutes to Southtowne Mall) and have found my neighborhood to be a good mixture of young families/empty nesters, Utah natives/out-of-state transplants and very safe to live in. As suggested by Kalimara Alpine is good neighborhood, in Utah County close to American Fork. It has a reputation for being "upscale", you'll find the average home prices there to be quite high compared to surrounding suburbs. You might also look in Highland (between Alpine and Draper). If you want to be closer to the city then the Sandy/Cottonwood heights area is certainly worth a look, although Sandy is a big suburb/city so some areas are more "upscale" than others. Daybreak is a nice "new" area and has some more affordable homes, but it is located quite a way west of I15, so depending on where you'll be working it could be quite a commute for you.

You could go North of SLC too on the east bench. East Bountiful, Centerville, Farmington and Fruit Heights are nice.

Thanks. Work will be in American Fork, however, being close to the airport will factor in also.

You may want to keep in mind that the further south in the valley you go, the more conservative it is.

Alpine, Cedar Hills, Lehi, Saratoga Springs, Draper, South Jordan (where Daybreak is mentioned earlier), Sandy. South Jordan may be the best bet to be in between American Fork and the Airport.
