Wow, this thread is surprising to me. I am not from Utah, nor do I live there, but I also never knew the locals called them by those names. I have always heard of them referred to as Bryce Canyon and Zion National Parks.

On a similar note, though a little off topic since it's not about Utah, I hate when people refer to Los Angeles as LA, as opposed to L. A. LA is the postal abbreviation for Louisiana! Of course most of the text message shortcuts and acronyms that are making their way into these forums annoy me, too!

The only person I've ever heard pronounce "Deseret" incorrectly was a tourist, who asked me why we Utahns misprounounce it! His assumption was that since it ends in "et," it must be a French word that should rhyme with "Chevrolet." I had to explain to him that not all words that end in "et" are French.

And for those who don't know, the double o's in "Hooper" are short, not long. They're like the o's in "cook" or "foot," not like the o's in "boot" or "loom."

And what about "Hurricane"? I know it resembles a tropical storm, but it's pronounced "Hurricun" by the locals.
